Sea Shell Searchers Newsletter

February 2006

President’s Message

I work with a Marketing Manager who is fond of asking, “What have you done for me lately?”   I was thinking about this today as Wanda was describing the home schooler’s field trip at Quintana Beach that she led this morning.  It was exciting hearing about the enthusiasm of these school kids and their treasures.  Admittedly I do not have a very good memory but I couldn’t remember the last time the Sea Shell Searchers did any serious sea shell searching, or beach cleaning, or most anything concerning shelling.  Maybe it is just me but it seems that it has been a considerable amount of time since I have done any serious shelling.  I wonder why?

I also have been thinking about the shell show coming up in May.  I am at a loss as to what to exhibit.  I am not terribly crafty or imaginative.  All I have are shells.  Hopefully you all have been thinking about an impressive exhibit, or a highly educational exhibit, or one from a faraway place.  I hope so!

I am the oral auction chairman for the annual Conchologists of America convention which will be held in Mobile, AL this year.  The proceeds from the auction are used to fund educational grants for molluscan research.  If you would like to make a donation of specimen shells, shell related items, fossils, etc. for the auction, please contact me.

If anyone has any suggestions for my conundrums, dilemmas, or shelling issues, please let me know.

Steven

Shell Show

The shell show will be held at the museum this year. We have more categories for small exhibits. This would be a good time for first timers to bring a special shell or small family to exhibit. The museum has drawers of shells and books to help you identify your shells. Members are available to give “expert” advice. Make this year the year you put an exhibit in the show.
