Brazosport Symphony Orchestra Hosts

Tuba Christmas Saturday December 3, 2016

November 21, 2016 — Calling all tuba and euphonium players! “TubaChristmas” returns for the second year in a row to Brazoria County on Saturday December 3, 2016. The Brazosport Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and the Brazosport Symphony League wants as many who are interested and able to join in! Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at The Clarion located on the campus of Brazosport College. Rehearsal will start at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 11:00 a.m. for lunch. Rehearsals and the performance will be led by BSO Conductor, Dr. John Ricarte.

The performance will be at Brazos Mall in Lake Jackson in the Center Court near JC Penney’s at 1:00 p.m. Musicians should bring their instrument and a music stand along with a chair to use at the mall. Registration fee is $10.00 and the music book is $20.00. Those who still have their TubaChristmas Song Book from last year can simply bring it with them.

Other tuba and euphonium related items will also be available at registration. “Everyone who participated last year had a wonderful time, which encouraged us to do this again,” said Harold Nicoll, president of The Brazosport Symphony Orchestra Council. “Dr. Ricarte is a wonderful conductor, and those who perform with him will benefit from the experience.”

TUBACHRISTMAS was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. Paul Lavalle in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink conducted the first TUBACHRISTMAS on Sunday, December 22, 1974. American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980, arranged traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS. Wilder composed many solo and ensemble compositions for tuba and euphonium. TubaChristmas will be performed in hundreds of locations in the U.S. this year, with the addition of Brazoria County.

Those with questions should call the Symphony League at: (713) 252-2181.
