Students in Brazosport Art League’s teen art class, Teen Studio Time, opened their annual exhibit in the gallery on Tuesday, May 9! The bold and bright show, Some Call It Chaos…We Call It Art Class, features art created by the 40 students in a wide variety of mediums ranging from watercolor and oil painting to glass mosaics and clay.
Join the students, their family & friends and BAL instructors for an opening week reception on Friday, May 12 from 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM in the gallery. Meet the artists, see the art and enjoy snacks & drinks. The show runs through Sunday, June 4.
Led by art instructors Linda Strickland and Mark Cameron, Teen Studio Time is open to 13 to 18-year olds and meets weekly on Tuesdays throughout the fall and spring semesters. Session 1 runs from 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM and Session 2 meets from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM, which allows for both homeschool and public/private school students to attend.
Strickland says the popular class allows the young artists to flex their creative muscles.
“We hold the reins loosely at Teen Studio,” she says. “Besides cleaning your brushes, we don’t have many rules except to respect yourself and others. And we give them permission to make a mess…it’s hard to create art without making a mess!
“About half the class are returning teens who have been in the program two to four years and they are a great example for the teens entering the program. We see them relax and open up as the year progresses…and then the magic happens! It’s tough being a teenager but for two hours out of their week, they have a place they can express themselves through art projects.”
