AUDITION INFO: Director Bobby Britton, Jr. and Assistant Director Juanita Kucera are holding open auditions for Nilo Cruz’s Anna in the Tropics for 8 characters, including five male-identifying and three female-identifying characters between the ages of early-twenties and fifties (open to flexibility during casting). Brazosport Center Stages is hoping to honor the ethnic backgrounds of the characters in choosing their cast; therefore actors who identify as Hispanic/Latinx/Cuban are strongly encouraged to audition!

ABOUT THE SHOW: Winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz

It is 1929 in Ybor City, Florida. A Cuban-American family working in a cigar factory early awaits the arrival of their new lector, Juan Julian who has been hired to read to the family during their long days of rolling cigars by hand. His arrival is a cause for celebration, but when he begins to read aloud from Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics, and the American dream prove a volatile combination. Shimmering with passion and poetry, don’t miss your chance to be part of this Pulitzer Prize-Winning drama.

PRODUCTION NOTE: Anna in The Tropics contains some triggering topics such as gun violence, implied assault, and murder. The production will also feature choreographed intimacy. It is recommended that you read the play or understand the play/characters before you audition. Cuttings are available in The Center office.

Performances: April 14-16 & 21-23, 2023
