Oil Painting Impressionism Workshop

Join us for a two-day Oil Painting Impressionism Workshop with artist and instructor Nathaniel Spates on Monday & Tuesday, July 29 & 30 from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM in Brazosport Art League studio! The registration fee includes instruction and most supplies, and is $110 for BAL members and $135 for non-members. This workshop is open to all levels of artists.

The workshop will mostly focus on landscapes, including skies, flowers, trees, fields, mountains, water and villages, and include multiple demonstrations of Nathaniel’s style, which can be described as abstract, impressionistic and gestural with lots of bright colors and texture. Each student will produce one to three original oil paintings over the course of the workshop, depending on how much time each artist spends on their paintings!

Please bring brushes, paper towels and disposable gloves (optional). If you have a favorite color you would like to use or a specific canvas size, please bring these items, but they are not required. We will take an hour break each day for lunch.

Nathaniel was the winner of Brazosport Art League’s top student honor in 2023, the Bruce Good Memorial Scholarship Award, and is currently studying studio art and game design at Samford University in Alabama.

A note from Nathaniel about the class:

This class is going to be fun, engaging and educational! I will begin each day with a demonstration covering the color theory, and other important nuances of abstract impressionistic painting. I will also give a few short talks about various techniques and important concepts (compositional, conceptual, and application). Then we will begin working on a piece. Full creative freedom is given to each individual student to paint whatever kind of landscape they desire; we will likely spend a considerable amount of time the first day designing the composition of our pieces. Students are encouraged to produce as many original oil paintings as possible!
