Brazosport Center Stages’ “An Iliad” Takes Top Prize at South West Theatre Conference

After advancing at the state-level competition in February, Brazosport Center Stages took the top prize last weekend for its production of An Iliad at the regional South West Theatre Conference (SWTC) in Kerrville.

The SWTC encompasses theatres in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, and included performances from Arkansas, New Mexico and two Texas theatres at the 2022 event.

Brothers Jeremy Todd and Cory Todd reprised their roles as The Poet and The Muse, respectively, in An Iliad, written by Dennis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson. Connie Marshall returned as the show’s director with Shirley Busbice in the role of stage manager and Wes Copeland handling lights and sound.

The production was named the Winning Performance and received the Audience Acclaim Award. Actor Jeremy Todd was named to the All-Star Cast and the crew received the Outstanding Lighting Design Award and Best Tech/Crew Award.

Jeremy Todd said the experience of competing at the SWTC was incredibly rewarding.

“Our visit to Kerrville to compete in the South West Theater Conference was such a positive experience,” he said. “Our hosts at The Cailloux Theater welcomed us like family and the other competing theaters performed like champions. It was an honor to simply participate, but taking home several awards including ‘Best Production’ was amazing!”

Director Connie Marshall said it was an honor to represent Center Stages at the competition.

“We faced some good competitors and are very proud of our performance,” she said. “Our cast, Jeremy and Cory, are exceptional story tellers who kept the audience enthralled from the moment the lights came up. Our crew did an excellent job of making sure the show was presented at the highest level possible and with true respect to the Cailloux City Center and those staffing the event.

“We are honored to have represented Brazosport Center Stages and the state of Texas at the South West Theatre Conference. We want to thank the adjudicator Kristi Quinn, the workshop presenters, The Kathleen C. Cailloux City Center for the Performing Arts, our new friends from community theaters throughout the southwest and the City of Kerrville. We had a blast!”

The Facts highlighted Brazosport Center Stages’ recent performance at the Theater Network of Texas’ TEXFest in today’s newspaper in “Center Stages earns accolades at theater fest”. Held last month in Kerrville, the competition and festival hosted four theaters from across the state.

Center Stages’ five-person cast and crew of An Iliad won several awards, including Best Actor, All-Star Cast, Backstage Award and the Audience Acclaim Award, as well as a paid advancement to the Southwest Theater Competition to be held next month.

Brazosport Center Stages’ “An Iliad” Wins Numerous Awards at TEXFest

Initially performed outdoors in spring 2021 to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions, Brazosport Center Stages’ production of An Iliad returned to the stage this last weekend at Theater Network of Texas, Inc.’s TEXFest in Kerrville. The theater festival and competition included performances from Boerne Community Theatre, Brazosport Center Stages, Fort Stockton Community Theatre and Playhouse 2000.

Written by Denis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson, Center Stages’ An Iliad featured actor Jeremy Todd reprising his role as The Poet and Cory Todd as The Muse. Connie Marshall directed the show, Shirley Busbice served as stage manager and Wes Copeland directed the production’s lighting and sound.

When Center Stages originally selected An Iliad to bring to the stage last year, the production allowed for a small cast and crew to limit interaction due to COVID-19. Three actors, including Jeremy Todd, took on the role, which amounts to a 90+ minute monologue with musical accompaniment by The Muse.

With 11 months having passed since the original performances, the cast and crew spent several weeks working to get the production stage-ready once again. Their hard work and dedication certainly paid off.

Center Stages’ production was deemed one of two winners and awarded a paid advancement to the Southwest Theater Competition in April, where they will compete against theaters from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. In addition to the production’s advancement, the cast and crew were recognized for their efforts.

Jeremy Todd was awarded “Best Actor” and Cory Todd was awarded “All Star Cast”. Center Stages also received the “Audience Acclaim Award” and the “Backstage Award”, which recognizes the company that judges felt operated in the most composed, efficient and outstanding manner during the festival.

Director Connie Marshall was pleased with both how well the performance went and how the audience responded.

“We were overwhelmed by the reception the performance received at TEXFest,” she said. “I am very proud of this hardworking cast and crew and excited to present An Iliad at the Southwest Theater Conference in April. It is a good story, told exceptionally well.”
