The Facts features Dia de los Muertos kickoff event

The Center for the Arts & Sciences teamed up with the Brazoria County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations this fall to celebrate Dia de los Muertos in the community during the month of October. The chamber held a kickoff reception at The Center on Friday, October 6 to launch the month’s activities, including performances by St. Jerome Catholic Church ballet folklorico dancers and Mariachi Imperio Nuevo group from Houston.

The Center’s juried art exhibition, “Los Vivos y Los Muertos”, also opened during the reception. The exhibit features 32 pieces of original art from 22 artists.

A reporter from The Facts attended the reception and a feature about the event was published the following week (10/11), Party for the dead: Brazosport Center for the Arts kickoff event ushers in monthlong celebration.

“Los Vivos y Los Muertos” art exhibit is on display in The Center’s lobby through Monday, November 6 and can be viewed during the following hours: M-F, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Saturday, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM; Sunday, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

The Facts highlights upcoming Dia de los Muertos activities

We’re excited to be participating in A Month of Remembrance, featuring activities celebrating Dia de los Muertos in Brazoria County! Brazosport Fine Arts Council is hosting a juried art exhibition, Los Vivos y Los Muertos, featuring art celebrating Hispanic and Latino culture at The Center from October 6 through November 3.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Apply NOW for “Los Vivos y Los Muertos” juried art exhibition!

***The submission deadline has been extended through Monday, September 11 at 12:00 PM (noon) to allow as many artists to complete and submit applications as possible. Due to this change, the juror’s deadline has also been pushed out to Monday, September 18. Artists will be notified of their status as soon as possible after this date. Los Vivos y Los Muertos is an exhibition featuring art that explores and honors the cultures, heritage, traditions and rich history of Mexico and the southwest United States with a concentration on work inspired by Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This juried exhibition is being hosted by Brazosport Fine Arts Council will be held at The Center for the Arts & Sciences from October 6 through November 3, 2023.

Emerging and established artists (ages 16 and above) are invited to submit images of completed work for consideration. Submission is open to the public and is open through September 6. The entry fee is $10 per submission, up to 3 submissions. No additional, incomplete or late submissions will be accepted.

A Best in Show prize of $1,000 will be awarded to a single piece. A single “runner up” prize of $300 will also be awarded.

We will accept all genres and styles that fit with the theme of the exhibition, both 2D and 3D. Eligible media includes, but is not limited to, paintings, oil, chalk, pastels, ink, drawings, photography, mixed media, ceramics, sculptures, metal work, wood work and fiber art. All works must be the original concept of the artist.

Brazosport Fine Arts Council, Lake Jackson Historical Association, Freeport Historical Museum, Freeport Main Street, Brazoria County Historical Museum, Brazoria County Library System and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Brazoria County, are collaborating this fall to honor Hispanic & Latino culture with a monthlong, county-wide celebration of Dia de los Muertos throughout October and early November 2023.

A kickoff reception and special performance will be held on Friday, October 6 from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM. Artists accepted into the exhibition will be invited to the reception and given two complimentary tickets to a performance scheduled to follow immediately after the reception.
