The Facts highlights “Ring of Fire” solar eclipse event at BASF Planetarium

Hundreds of local people turned out to view the “Ring of Fire” Annular Solar Eclipse at BASF Planetarium on Saturday, October 14 between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Planetarium volunteers were on hand to answer questions and provide demonstrations, as well as sell safe eclipse glasses to attendees.

The Facts published a web-only feature on Saturday, “Eyes to the sky: Eclipse-viewers see part of the ‘ring of fire’ at the BASF Planetarium”, including photos from the event. Upcoming solar eclipse event featured in The Facts

BASF Planetarium has been gearing up for the October 14 “Ring of Fire” annular solar eclipse since early September, offering weekly showings of “All About Eclipses” in the fulldome planetarium to educate the public about eclipses and what they can expect on Saturday. The planetarium and The Center’s box office have been selling safe eclipse glasses for two for $5 and have seen sales spike in recent days.

Members of the community are invited to watch the eclipse outside the planetarium on Saturday (10/14) from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, when volunteers will be on hand to answer questions, provide demonstrations and sell more glasses.

The Facts previewed the eclipse and the planetarium’s event in a feature, “Ring of fire: Annular eclipse Saturday to darken skies, could hurt eyes”, in today’s (10/12) paper, including photos from recent planetarium shows.

The Facts features Dia de los Muertos kickoff event

The Center for the Arts & Sciences teamed up with the Brazoria County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations this fall to celebrate Dia de los Muertos in the community during the month of October. The chamber held a kickoff reception at The Center on Friday, October 6 to launch the month’s activities, including performances by St. Jerome Catholic Church ballet folklorico dancers and Mariachi Imperio Nuevo group from Houston.

The Center’s juried art exhibition, “Los Vivos y Los Muertos”, also opened during the reception. The exhibit features 32 pieces of original art from 22 artists.

A reporter from The Facts attended the reception and a feature about the event was published the following week (10/11), Party for the dead: Brazosport Center for the Arts kickoff event ushers in monthlong celebration.

Mike Fulton of TriCoast Photos was also at the event and The Facts published a gallery of photos of the ballet folklorico dancers. See the photos online.

“Los Vivos y Los Muertos” art exhibit is on display in The Center’s lobby through Monday, November 6 and can be viewed during the following hours: M-F, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Saturday, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM; Sunday, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

BSO’s “Concertmaster’s Choice” previewed in The Facts

Brazosport Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of the 2023-2024 season, Concertmaster’s Choice, kicks off the organization’s 81st season and pays tribute to its longtime concertmaster Darren Tidwell, who is celebrating 30 years in the role this year.

Set for Saturday, October 7 at 7:30 PM at The Clarion at Brazosport College, the concert will feature Tidwell’s musical selections, including classical pieces like Mozart’s Overture to the Marriage of Figaro and Rossini’s William Tell Overture. Audiences may also recognize contemporary music like AC/DC’s Thunderstruck and Coldplay’s Clocks.

The Facts highlights upcoming Dia de los Muertos activities

We’re excited to be participating in A Month of Remembrance, featuring activities celebrating Dia de los Muertos in Brazoria County! Brazosport Fine Arts Council is hosting a juried art exhibition, Los Vivos y Los Muertos, featuring art celebrating Hispanic and Latino culture at The Center from October 6 through November 3.

BASF Planetarium’s solar eclipse programs featured in The Facts

BASF Planetarium’s September show, “All About Eclipses”, educates viewers about eclipses, how to safely view them, and what they can expect from the two solar eclipses coming up in October and next April. The Facts featured the planetarium’s plans for the partial solar eclipse event on Saturday, October 14.

The Facts features new art exhibit, “Illusions of Reality”, by Sherry Hall Shelton

Local artist Sherry Hall Shelton opened her solo exhibit, Illusions of Reality, in Brazosport Art League gallery last week and was the guest of honor at a reception to celebrate its opening on Sunday, September 17.

The Facts published a feature about the artist and her new show on the front page of today’s (9/20) paper, “The gift of painting: Popular local artist presents diverse collection”.

Brazosport Museum of Natural Science’s Teddy Bear Picnic featured in The Facts

Brazosport Museum of Natural Science’s volunteers had a BEAR-y good time with visitors at Teddy Bear Picnic on Saturday, September 16! Families brought their own teddy bears and picnic lunches, participated in a teddy bear parade and met the museum’s new black bear in the Hall of Wildlife, named Moon.

The Facts published a feature on the front page of today’s (9/19) edition, “MOON BEAMS: Kids picnic around new addition to museum’s Hall of Animals”, including several photos of museum visitors.

Lakeside Starry Night collaboration featured in The Facts

Brazosport Planetarium teamed up with Angleton Parks and Recreation Department last weekend to host Lakeside Starry Night, an evening of astronomy-themed family fun at Lakeside Park in Angleton on Friday, August 25. Families showed up to learn about constellations, look at the night sky through telescopes and make star wheels.
